Cuba Cultural Tour and Havana Jazz Festival 2019  Led by Greg Landau Ph. D

A group trip to Cuba will be led by Greg Landau, instructor of Latin American Studies at U.C. Santa Cruz, and City College of San Francisco (CCSF).  Professor Landau has long standing ties to Cuba and is fluent in Spanish. In 1960, at age 5, he first went to Cuba with his parents, film-maker and author Saul Landau, and poet and actress Nina Serrano, where they lived for several months. In 1968, as a teenager, he returned to Cuba to study art for a year.  Over the years, he has traveled to Cuba more than twenty times, guiding educational tours, teaching, and attending conferences. In June 2018 he led his tenth trip for CCSF.  Besides an academic and an expert on Latin America, he is an accomplished musician, a producer of eight Grammy-nominated CD's, and is personally acquainted with dozens of Cuban musicians. Itinerary

The itinerary will consist of activities that support and enhance contact with the Cuban people.  The full-time schedule of educational lectures and cultural activities, such as attending the Havana Jazz Festival, will provide many opportunities to interact with local Cubans.  See Itinerary.

Airfare

Cost of airfare: $494.91 total  (base fare $367.00, plus taxes $127.91).  Round-trip, economy class on American Airlines: San Francisco-Miami-Havana. Cost of tour (other than airfare) *

$2,950 per person, double occupancy.  +$430 per person, single occupancy (= $3,380). 

Cost includes: 

-Transfers to and from the airport in Cuba

-Lodging in "casas particulares" which are private homes with private bathroom and air conditioning, giving you a cultural experience to live with a Cuban family during your stay to learn about Cuban culture and exchange ideas. 

-Meals at "paladares" which are privately owned restaurants, set forth in the Itinerary. 

-Entrance fees to activities set forth in the Itinerary.  

-Jazz Festival entrance credentials

-Transportation within Cuba with a dedicated bus and driver.

-A bi-lingual Cuban  guide. 

-Lectures with high level Cuban experts.

-Travel visa.  You will need a valid passport.  Professor Landau will obtain a visa for each participant.

ITINERARY

Day 1- Tuesday January 15- Travel Day- SFO- Miami-Havana arrive at night 

(BLD not included) 

Day 2, Wednesday. January 16, Havana

Lecture on Cuba’s Colonial History.

We begin with a walking tour to get a feel for the city and capture the rhythm of Old Havana. Attend the Jazz Festival inauguration.( BLD)

Day 3: Thursday, January 17, Havana

Lecture on Art and Cuban Culture.

Today we will stroll through Old Havana on our way to the Museo de Bellas Artes to view their collection of modern art, especially the work of the Generation of the 80’s. Participate in an authentic rumba performance at the home of Pablo Menendez, leader of the band Mezcla, and meet local musicians. In the evening visit La Fabrica de Arte Cubano and attend the Jazz Festival (BLD)

Day 4: Friday, January 18, Havana

Lecture on the Afro-Cuban Religions.

In the morning we will visit art studios of Kcho and the studio of photographer Roberto Chile. Attend the Jazz Festival (BLD)

Day 5:  Saturday, Jan 19, Havana

Visit the Patio Cultural Cimarron in Soroa, Maye, for a traditional meal at a rural cultural center.

Attend the organic medicinal farm of Eloisa and have fresh juice.

Day 6: Sunday, Jan. 20, Matanzas- Varadero

Lecture on the Musical Traditions of Matanzas with Ethiel Falilde.

Today we explore Matanzas, known as the “Athens of Cuba”, to view the colonial architecture and visit the studio of artists, Galeria Lolo, and listen to rumba at the Callejon de las Tradicciones, and meet local musicians. 

Spend the night in Varadero (BLD)

Day 7: Monday, Jan. 21, Cienfuegos

Leave Varadero after lunch and continue to the town of Cienfuegos, a sparkling gem of Caribbean architecture. In the evening we will enjoy a concert by legendary Los Naranjos and meet local musicians.  (BLD)

Day 8: Tuesday, Jan. 22, Cienfuegos

Lecture on the legacy of Benny More.

We will honor the great Cuban singer Benny More by visiting his grave site and the Benny More Museum, and Casino Congo (a temple of the Palo Monte religion) and talk to townspeople about this local hero. We will have the opportunity to dine independently in Las Lajas, and then in the late afternoon will visit the Maroya Cultural Center to view beautiful handicrafts, meet local artists and hear a lecture from a local art expert. Day 9: Wednesday. Jan, 23, Havana

Return to Havana and at night listen to traditional Cuban music and meet local musicians.  (BD - Lunch not included)

Day 10: Thursday. Jan 24, Havana

Free day in Havana to relax, shop and pack and say goodbye to your new Cuban friends.  Farewell dinner

Day 11: Friday, Jan 25, Havana - Miami -San Francisco 

Bid “adios” to Cuba and board our return flight to the U.S. (B- Lunch and dinner not included).
